Vision where others can’t see
Integrated solutions for persistent visual monitoring in marine ecosystems.
What we build
Low-light camera systems designed for long-term underwater and above-water deployment, with integrated self-cleaning optics for sustained visibility.
Integrated data pipelines and dashboards that provide remote access, visualization, and insight from long-dwell visual observations.
Simple, effective image processing at the edge—such as blur and low-light detection—to reduce wasted data and extend deployment duration.
Iterative Development, In the Field
These cameras have been developed iteratively through real deployments, not just lab testing. Each generation reflects lessons learned from installation, long-term operation, recovery, and servicing in coastal environments.
The focus has been on reliability, persistence, and operational clarity over long time scales.
About
Nereus Vision is a founder-led marine technology company focused on persistent environmental monitoring in coastal and offshore environments.
The company was founded by Nick Buemond, an ocean engineer with firsthand experience designing, deploying, and servicing long-duration ocean hardware. Nick previously worked at Sofar Ocean Technologies, where he saw how reliable, low-cost sensors—both above and below the waterline—can transform scientific observation and enable real-time operational decision-making in remote marine environments. Yet the same practical questions surfaced repeatedly during field operations: Had a mooring been struck by a vessel or debris? Was a sensor truly malfunctioning, or simply in need of cleaning? What did the seabed look like before and after an anchor was installed?
These questions were not abstract. They emerged during the planning and execution of deployments, recoveries, and servicing of moorings that had to remain in the field for 6-12 months at a time—often under tight weather windows and limited access. Over time, it became clear that persistent visual context was as critical as traditional sensor data for understanding system performance, environmental change, and on-the-ground (or underwater) conditions.
Nick’s motivation for founding Nereus Vision is also deeply personal. As a diver along the Northern California coast, he has witnessed kelp forests decline into urchin barrens—ecosystems changing faster than traditional monitoring approaches can easily capture. That experience highlighted a fundamental challenge in marine management: without continuous, trusted observations, it is difficult to establish baselines, detect change early, or respond rapidly and effectively.
Nereus Vision builds rugged, long-dwell camera systems and supporting software designed to operate with minimal human intervention while delivering clear, actionable insight to teams on shore. By extending vision into hard-to-access environments, the company helps partners track change over time, diagnose issues in near real time, and make better, faster decisions in environmental stewardship and resource management.
